Why We Cap Our Classes (And Why That's a Good Thing)
Every month, we have to turn families away. Not because we don't want them (in fact, quite the opposite!)
We turn families away because our classes are full, and we'd rather have a genuine waitlist than squeeze one more kid onto the floor.
Here's why that's deliberate, not a limitation.
The number: 8 kids, plus one make up spot
Every Westside class runs with a maximum of 8 gymnasts, plus one reserved spot for a make up class. That's it. We don't flex it for a busy week, and we don't make exceptions when the waitlist gets long.
It would be easy to take more. More kids per class means more revenue per hour, and gymnastics clubs across Melbourne do exactly that. We've made a different choice, and we want to be upfront about why.
What 8 kids actually buys your child
With 8 kids on the floor, a coach can watch every landing. They can catch the wobble before it becomes a bad habit, correct a grip before it becomes a fall, and notice when a shy kid has just done something brave for the first time.
That's not possible at 15 or 20 kids per class and rotating coaches. Somebody always slips through. We don't want anybody at Westside to slip through.
It also means our coaches know your child's name. Not "the kid in the black leotard" - your child, specifically, with their specific goals and their specific week. That's the whole idea behind coaches who are visible, trusted and known by name.
Why this matters more than ever this year
This month is National Child Protection Week, and we've spent a good part of 2026 refreshing our child safety policies and procedures from the ground up. Every coach on our floor is Working With Children Check accredited. Small classes are part of that same commitment - it's a lot harder to look after a child properly in a crowd.
Quality over volume isn't just a tagline for us. It shapes literally every class we run.
What this means for you
If you're on a waitlist right now, this is why. If you've been thinking about enrolling, this is also why spots move quickly. We're not being precious, we're protecting the thing that makes Westside work.
We'd rather stay the size we are and do it properly than get bigger and lose what makes this club feel like Westside.
